How to Wire and Ground an Electric Fence
An electric fence only works if the shock can complete a full circuit: energizer, out along the live fence line, through the animal, into the ground, and back to the energizer's earth terminal. Get the fence-line connections and grounding wrong, and the fence can look fully installed while barely working.

Safety first: Keep the energizer switched off while you're making connections. Never touch a live fence line or terminal while the energizer is on, and keep the live line and earth line clearly separated so they can't accidentally touch.
The fence-line connection
The live (fence) line runs from the energizer's fence terminal out to every strand:
- Connect insulated lead-out cable from the energizer's fence terminal to the nearest strand, keeping it clear of the ground and anything metal it could touch along the way.
- Join strands to each other at corners, ends, and gate points with a joint clamp — an aluminium clamp on aluminium/galvanised wire, or the connector type matched to your wire. A loose or corroded joint is the single most common cause of a weak fence.
- Mount strands on insulators at every post so the wire never touches the post itself.
- Fit a gate handle at each gate or access point so the fence stays live across it without a permanent connection you'd need to cut every time you open the gate.
The ground (earth) line
The earth side is just as important as the live side — without it, the circuit through the animal never completes.
- Drive earth rods close to the energizer. As a rule of thumb: about 1 earth rod per 1.5 joules of the energizer's stored energy, minimum 3 rods, with more added in dry or sandy soil where conductivity is poor.
- Space multiple rods roughly 2–3m apart.
- Bond the rods together and back to the energizer's earth terminal with earth cable and earth clamps at each rod.
- Keep the earth system separate from any household/building earth unless your installer specifically designs it that way.
The power line, in short
The energizer itself also needs a power connection — battery and, if fitted, a solar panel and charge controller. That's a separate wiring job from the fence-line and earth connections covered here. Wiring onto an existing fence (chain-link, zinc, or other)
Adding electric strands to a fence you already have is a different job from wiring a new standalone fence, not just a shorter version of it.
- Mount offset insulator brackets roughly 15cm out from the existing fence face — see the strand height planner's "Existing fence" mode for recommended heights.
- Wire the lead-out cable to the offset strands only. The live wire must never touch the chain-link mesh, zinc sheet, or its posts — accidental contact silently shorts the whole system, and you may not notice until you test it.
- Don't bond the existing metal fence into the electrified circuit as an extra earth path unless a staff-reviewed site plan calls for it. An existing fence usually isn't a controlled, consistent earth return, and if it's touching the live offset wire anywhere without being properly isolated, it can also become an unintended shock hazard.
- Earth rods are still required near the energizer, wired exactly as for a new fence — the existing fence is not a substitute for a proper earth rod system.
- Walk the entire run and check for contact between the offset wire and the existing fence before relying on it.
Quick comparison: new fence vs. existing fence
New standalone fence:
- Live line runs the full fence perimeter on its own insulators and posts.
- Earth rods installed near the energizer.
- Main risk: loose joints or poor earthing.
Adding to an existing fence:
- Live line runs on offset brackets ~15cm out from the existing fence.
- The existing fence stays out of the electrified circuit unless staff-reviewed.
- Earth rods still installed near the energizer, same as a new fence.
- Main risk: the live wire accidentally contacting the existing metal fence.
Before you switch it on
Once the fence-line and earth connections are made, verify everything before relying on it — voltage at the terminal, midpoint, and far end, plus the earth and gate connections. Use our installation testing checklist to work through it step by step.
